Penalties Move Toward Higher Fines for Water Reports
Kansas lawmakers back a Department of Agriculture plan to raise penalties for failing to file annual water use reports, targeting repeat offenders while sparing first-time errors. Susan Metzger testified that missing reports undermine accurate statewide water models and fair penalties for overpumping. The bill would also lift penalties for related violations like overpumping or meter tampering beyond the current $1,000 cap. The department will file the proposal with the Department of See Water use, Page A5.

Bill on school consolidation prompts fears about buses

Bradford says the bill does not close schools or cut pensions, aiming to save money amid a tight state budget.
