Beard Contest Opens in Garden City Centennial Observance

Garden City launches a Centennial beard growing contest inviting male residents to grow beards mustaches goatees and sideburns. Centennial badges will cost, with prizes at cost. Contest runs until a June community event. Chamber of Commerce officials outline plans for coordinating Centennial activities including a county calendar and various events.

John H Thompson 33 says he will not submit to pressure after his firing from a $73 weekly job as an assistant soda fountain manager. He refused to imply any connection to his son’s attendance at McDonogh No 1 school amid the controversy over a two month boycott by white residents of a New Orleans public school. J C Adams, the shop manager, claimed ignorance of Thompson’s son’s school and said Thompson was dismissed for not “cutting the mustard.”

Roger Bailey Pratt Junior College won the television speaking contest and Harold Lawson Emporia State was best extemporaneous speaker. Planners Finish Mailing Books in Garden City

The Garden City Finney County Planning Commission mailed three pamphlets on planning and zoning. The third pamphlet includes maps of problem areas within a 3 mile area, a master plan, and proposed zoning boundaries. It also contains a postage paid return card for residents and businesses to share opinions on zoning regulations. Kansas Day Club Elects Shriver

Rep Garner Shriver, a freshman congressman from the 4th District, won the presidency of the Kansas Day Club on Friday. Mrs Hobart Hoyt of Lyons became vice president and John Hope of Topeka was re-elected secretary. Johan Wall of Sedna withdrew from consideration. tradition suggests he would be in line for election as provident next year.

Champlin No. 1 Stone hits oil near Garden City

Champlin Oil and Refining Co. reports the No. 1 Stone well, 14 miles southwest of Garden City, producing 66 barrels daily of 83.4 gravity oil. The test marks the start of production from the Pleasant Prairie Marmaton pool in Finney County.
