Rocky coach Welton shaped wrestling legacy in Kansas
The Welton family recalls coach Welton the legendary Kansas wrestling mentor known for Rockyisms. He produced many wrestlers now coaching, including Abilene Middle School’s George Havke, and mentored stars like 1990 state champ Martin Segovia who became Garden City’s athletic director. Welton’s hands on, stern yet caring approach and quotable phrases defined a demanding, supportive coaching lineage across generations.
