Now a teacher in Rio, she revisits Kansas with husband Paula, recounting lasting bonds with the Roderick and Mulch families and their shared memories. Her story urges ordinary people to broaden ties to reduce global tensions.

Miller stands by highway projects amid budget woes
Secretary Deb Miller defends the credibility of Kansas transportation plans as the state faces a tight budget. She says ongoing highway commitments will not be abandoned, even if funding shifts occur. Sebelius proposes moving 165 million from highway funds to general programs for 2004, with uncertainty about 2005. Miller notes the 10 year, 13.5 billion program began in 1999 and may be spread over 11 or 12 years. She cites past gains in credibility from sticking to announced projects while lawmakers raised fuel taxes and fees to cover shortfalls.
