Federal program funds hoop houses for farmers nationwide
The federal government has spent about 13 million dollars to help more than 2,400 farmers in 48 states buy high tunnels or hoop houses. These structures extend growing seasons, especially in the north, and are touted as environmentally friendly with efficient irrigation and reduced pests. NRCS runs a three year Know Your Farmer Know Your Food pilot to promote them, with more funds available. Farmers like Earl Snell in Alabama report year round production and stronger market timing.
