Sierra Club seeks halt on Sunflower Holcomb plant permit
The Sierra Club filed for an injunction to block Sunflower’s Holcomb power plant permit amid federal air quality rule changes. KDHE rushed the process, critics say, to beat new greenhouse gas rules, while Sunflower and supporters defend the permit as compliant and protective of health. Sunflower plans an 895 MW generator serving about 400,000 Kansans with 695 MW reserved for Tri State. The case also probes a 2009 agreement aiding permit progress and prior Bremby denial in 2007.

District eyes $2M budget hit and tax options
Kansas districts face a $2 million reduction amid Brownback's plan reducing base per pupil aid by 232 dollars. Local option budgets may rise via a two mill property tax, while layoffs and attrition may trim paraprofessionals and teaching posts as administrators warn of shifting funds and lost federal stimulus. Garden City bears the impact with state aid changes and missing stimulus dollars.
