Soldier returns from long deployment to slow civilian life
Davie Medina details nearly two years of deployments, choosing to stay in the Army guard for more time while missing family and a prime rib dish. He spent months apart from his wife and finally rejoined them, describes adjusting to civilian life as slow and tough, and notes plans to remain in the guard for three more years though another deployment is unlikely soon. He also comments on opposition to a full troop withdrawal from Iraq and hopes to use his training in a new job.

Garden City police face staffing shortages amid vacancies
Garden City Police Chief James Hawkins says GCPD is short staffed with 58 sworn officers, including the chief and commanders. Fully staffed, the department would have 42 patrol officers and six detectives, with nine dispatchers now and up to 15 when full. Three officers are in training and three in the academy, graduating March 4. Four patrol openings arose from moves to Olathe, Baldwin City, and Oklahoma, plus one held over from last year. Hawkins notes turnover 14 to 15 percent in 2004 and ongoing recruitment.

Dighton man heads to Canada on cattle safety tour
Hineman former Kansas Livestock Association president says a fact finding trip to Alberta and Calgary will review Canadian feed bans border procedures and cattle identity practices. The Kansas group will visit rendering, feed, and processing facilities and meet Canadian Cattlemen's Association reps to seek answers on BSE risk controls and cross border movements. Huseman notes Canada mirrors the U S feed ban but scrutiny remains over compliance while Japan reaction to possible Canadian products is considered.
