Sunflower signs 24 MW wind deal in Smoky Hills phase two
Sunflower Electric adds to its wind portfolio with a 24 MW contract from TradeWind Energy for Smoky Hills phase two. Midwest Cooperative, serving 47,000 electric and 42,000 natural gas customers in central Kansas, bought 25 MW in phase one, as KDHE denied a 700 MW Holcomb coal expansion permit. Sunflower operates a 1,257 MW mix of wind, gas, coal and 2,300 miles of transmission serving six member cooperatives with over 400,000 customers. Westar’s three Kansas wind farms total about 300 MW, with Central Plains Wind Farm 99 MW in Wichita and Scott counties, set to start late next year, creating hundreds of jobs and significant landowner royalties.
