Legislature Addresses Deferred Maintenance For Public Colleges
State lawmakers on their second day moved to set aside funds for deferred maintenance at public colleges and universities. A $727 million backlog at the State Board of Regents emerged in a House committee while the Senate formed a task force to study repair needs. Gov. Sebelius showed support for action but did not commit to a plan in her State of the State address. Senate leaders pledged funds to finish a three year, $541 million public school commitment, and a House budget plan proposed diverting $76.6 million into a five year university repair fund, potentially adding $15 million annually for repairs. Officials warned the proposed funds still fall short of the $84 million needed yearly to prevent further deterioration. A five year comprehensive Regents plan and a higher education task force were also announced to prioritize and study deferred maintenance, with a Feb. 1 deadline for recommendations.
