Officials declare emergency over poultry disease in California
Gov. Gray Davis and the federal Agriculture Department declared states of emergency over Exotic Newcastle Disease. The quarantine expanded to all of Southern California as authorities deploy money and personnel to halt the outbreak, which is fatal to birds but harmless to humans. More than 1.2 million chickens have been culled since December, with earlier outbreaks in the 1970s costing millions. The disease was first found in September in Los Angeles County backyard flocks, with quarantines covering Los Angeles Riverside San Bernardino San Diego and Orange counties, then Santa Barbara Ventura and Imperial counties. Eggs are sanitized and allowed to pass through the zone.
