Cuba Open Trade Could Boost Kansas Farmers Says Moran Ally
Kansas farmers hear arguments for easing Cuba sanctions with data showing Cuba bought 150 million dollars of EU wheat this year at transport costs of 20 to 25 dollars a ton versus 6 to 7 dollars from the United States. Proponents cite a 2010 Texas A&M study predicting 365 million dollars in extra U.S. agricultural sales and 1.1 billion into the U.S. economy with travel ban relief, creating about 6,000 jobs. Some farmers warn limited spillover to Kansas. others, like Greg Krissek, see broader trade gains and hope Cuban demand grows for corn and feed.
