Whitham Decides Not to Seek Re Election as Mayor

Mayor Whitham announced he will not seek another term amid a city economy hit by a fire that displaced about 2300 workers. He cites declining sales tax revenue from 2000 to 2008 and a modest rebound in 2004, with a 2002 budget mill levy of 30.65 and a 2005 plan at 33.695 mills. He hopes for fresh candidates to run and says he will continue to serve the public in another capacity. Garden City Commissioner Reynaldo Mesa called his decision unfortunate but understandable given other obligations.
