World Youth Day founder Pope John Paul II’s beacon of youth
John Paul II cherished young people and launched World Youth Day in 1986. He spoke of happiness found in love for others and drew strength from travels to greet the world’s needy. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he continued to travel, later greeting crowds from a rolling chair before near the end when he could no longer eat or speak.
