Budget holes and education funding dominate Kansas lawmakers talk

Kansas legislators gathered at a Garden City prelegislative coffee to discuss a looming $279 million shortfall this fiscal year and a $435 to $485 million gap next year. They highlighted the K-12 funding mandate aiming for roughly $800 more per pupil annually, totaling about $548 million each year, and noted December tax revenues fell $15.1 million short of projections. Governor Brownback proposed diverting funds from pensions and highways to cover the deficit.
