First recognized Black U.S. priest Augustine Tolton in Chicago
Augustine Tolton, born enslaved in Missouri in 1854, became the first acknowledged Black Catholic priest in the United States. After surviving discrimination, he served Chicago and Quincy parishes, preached eloquent sermons, and worked to fund Saint Monica's Church. He died at 43 during a 1897 Chicago heat wave, leaving a legacy used to address ongoing racial tensions in the church.

Alevis Struggle for Religious Freedom in Turkey
In Istanbul Alevis, Turkey's largest religious minority, practice a mystic form of Islam with dancing chanting and trance. They face discrimination and barriers to worship funding, while EU concerns highlight Turkey's religious freedoms. Sufis are more warmly regarded by the government, whose stance tests the nation’s secular and religious divides.
