Fast food calories and sodium shift over 18 years
Tufts researchers analyzed 27 menu items from three top US fast food chains between 1996 and 2013. Eight items had fewer calories in 2013, nine more. five of 18 tested sodium items were lower, seven higher. Large fries sodium varied widely. small fries rose 20 to 50 to 90 calories across chains. Trans fat in fries fell to undetectable levels after campaigns against hydrogenated oils. A typical large cheeseburger fries drink exceeded daily calorie goals, and meals provided 63 to 97 percent of daily sodium in some chains. Results published in Preventing Chronic Disease.
