Kansas House unveils plan for 500 million school funding

With the 2006 session half over the Kansas House Select Committee on School Finance moved to introduce a bill to phase in about 500 million dollars in funding over three years. Speaker Doug Mays said the bill would stay in the ballpark despite glitches in exact figures and distribution details.

Chairman buckles down on booster bill

In Topeka Senate Transportation Chairman Les Donovan pursues a fifth vote on a booster seat bill after House passage. The measure would require drivers to secure children in booster seats and would create a class C misdemeanor for leaving a child eight or younger alone in a vehicle without a supervising person over thirteen. Fire victim transferred to Lakin hospital

Garden City woman LaMona Johnson, injured in a February 5 house fire at 506 N Ninth St, was released from Via Christi Regional Medical Center Burn Unit in Wichita and transferred to Kearny County Hospital in stable condition. Her 3-year-old son Derik Johnson died from injuries on February 8 after firefighters found them inside the rental two story home.

Holcomb gets state grant for street repairs

City of Holcomb receives a state grant totaling 112 090 dollars toward a 420 090 dollar street improvement project. City Clerk Robin Pena said the Department of Commerce notified the city after it was initially told the grant would not be awarded.

Moran cites high medical costs hurting Lakin residents

U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran on his Big First Listening Tour in Lakin says health care prices are harming area residents and communities. Deerfield resident Kent Landon cites agriculture tied economics as reducing ability to pay for care. Moran cites malpractice costs and $78 billion in unnecessary tests last year as part of the problem.
