YMCA leagues draw hundreds for winter programs
About 350 people participate in five YMCA sponsored basketball and volleyball leagues this winter. Ninety six men play volleyball on Tuesday nights across eight church teams, with four games per night at the junior high gym. Junior high boys and girls basketball include about 90 more players. Saturday afternoon cage play at the junior high gym features 142 boys in third fourth and fifth sixth grade leagues at Ben Grimsley Gym and Garfield Gym. Curt Shipley directs the two part program with Buff varsity players coaching. Darrell Nelson and Lee Albert lead the wrestling program for 175 to 200 boys starting March 7. In New York, Jets kicker Jim Turner will receive the Golden Foot Award at the eastern seminar on Saturday night.
