Finney County commissioners, seeking to build eight miles of county road in the Sandhills ten miles south of Hotcomb, face opposition from three farmers who disagree with the recent decision. The dispute centers on the project’s location and impact on farmland and local access.
At a Garden City commission session Monday nearby residents opposed the present road site though former county official Arthur Stone proposed an alternate route west of the current construction. Stone and his son Billy Stone and son-in-law Loren Cronin argued the new route would better serve area farmers. Commissioner Bob Buerkle recalled prior public steps and said landowners already favored the established path. The Stones sought cattle gates at the ends of a mile of cropland to be pastured, but no decision was made.
Leroy Robinson writes to Finney County taxpayers praising the 1975 road project that connects townships 26-34 and 26-33 to the potential Deerfield and Master Feeders routes. He notes the petition, public meetings, and county approval on August 25 1975, plus contracted dirt work by Cummings Earth Moving with county light maintenance. A letter from F Arthur Stone of South Star Rt. argues Finney and possibly Haskell counties should reroute an eight mile road south from Holcomb to Masters Feeders No. 2. He claims the change adds four miles of travel, ten miles of construction, and costs, but would provide a main road rather than a service route, avoiding a cheaper sandhills road. Stone notes lack of invitation for some residents and criticizes local publicity while urging a practical, county-wide solution.
