Fred B. Reimer, 40, Kalvesta school board member, died unexpectedly at his home from a heart attack. Born January 5, 1919 in Barton County, he lived in Kalvesta 29 years and served as Garfield township committeeman. Survived by his widow Audrey and children Donald Marilyn Jeanette, plus his mother Mrs. Bob Graham and his fathers Charles and Walter, and sister Mrs. Olive Eichman. A government scientist has developed a simple remote control device to record earthquakes and monitor atomic explosions. The robot quake recorder, set on an Arizona mountainside, can detect nuclear tests in the United States and Pacific areas. Richard R. Ross of the Coast and Geodetic Survey led the project, now in use about 15 miles from the Tucson Magnetic Observatory.
Washington AP The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association acts today on a proposed resolution urging Congress to keep government financing for rural power projects and to defeat Eisenhower plans to rely more on private capital and raise the 2 percent loan interest to cover treasury costs. Leaders expect near unanimous approval at a convention with 6 000+ farmer representatives. President Eisenhower told attendees that borrowers should pay interest equal to the money’s cost if able. He said the REA is no longer an infant enterprise.
In Palo Alto, Lockheed Missiles and Space Division unveiled a 44 foot wind tunnel with a 20 million kilowatt plant that can produce heat flashes hotter than the sun and speeds 19 times the speed of sound for missile nose cone tests. The device, named hotshot by its designers Rottald Smelt and Dr Terry E Turner, simulates re entry conditions for space craft.
Robert H Burtis former Garden City attorney has been appointed chief counsel of the US Army ordnance special weapons ammunition command at Dover New Jersey. He began this month and will supervise legal offices at the Picatinny Arsenal and the Ordnance ammunition command while previously serving as chief counsel at Joliet since 1954.

In district court Lewis Hiram Miller, 67, pleaded guilty to statutory rape of a 13 year old girl and was sentenced to a term between one and 21 years. Co-defendant Lida Huston, the girl's mother, received a similar term for aiding and abetting statutory rape. Also in district court Harold Allen, 38, of Garden City was found guilty of simple assault and sentenced to one year in county jail.

Gov. George Docking defended wage changes for Kansas University and Kansas State College maintenance staff. He said many workers misunderstood the shift to civil service rates on January 1, noting 534 employees at KU and K State as of November 1958.
