AP survey shows states plan narrow immunization efforts focusing on elderly and chronically ill. Officials await consent forms warning of Guillain Barré syndrome as vaccine distribution dates slip from today to late next week after DEHWE lifted the prior moratorium.
In Topeka Gov Bennett awarded Karen Breault and Danny Corbin for saving younger children from fire. Breault, a Clay County High freshman, carried a baby to safety and fetched help after spotting a blaze on a farm porch. Corbin, an eighth grader from Clay Center, helped evacuate children and attempted to extinguish a mattress fire. The actions occurred December and January at local residences.
A gunman in Indianapolis seized Meridian Mortgage executive Richard Hall and wired a sawed off shotgun to Hall's neck, threatening to die. Police and an Army bomb squad monitored the 24 hour standoff as negotiations continued and residents evacuated.
Gov Robert F Bennett voiced sorrow at the Kansas Senate's defeat of a death penalty bill and warned it could worsen inmate population control at Lansing. He backed a 30 year minimum before parole for life term murder convicts, argued deterrence, and urged funding to expand corrections including an Osawatomie medium security prison. He cited discussions with Dr Karl Menninger on prison policy while stressing judges set sentences.
Dr. M. P. Jack Reeve, 57, cattleman and former veterinarian, named to the State Board of Regents for a four year term by Gov. Robert F. Bennett. Also named was Frank A. Lowman of Hays. Reeve, once veterinarian here 1948 60, has led Kansas Livestock Association in 1975 and serves as regional VP of the American National Cattlemen’s Assn. His appointment awaits Senate confirmation.
Holcomb contractor Bill Earnest said he would pressure the city council over irregular enforcement of ordinances. He cited a zoning change granting a grocery store access via a street not yet built and a denied temporary septic tank permit. The council noted a street contract had been let but winter weather delays, allowing the store to open.
A six-year-old girl and her four-year-old sister were picked up by police for stealing food and money from a mobile home on US50 West. The court placed custody of the five siblings with Social and Rehabilitation Services, amid a pending dependency neglect action against the mother. Detention hearing planned for tomorrow.
