IRS office dates set in Garden City for income tax help

In Garden City, the Garden City post office building hosts IRS help dates this month from today through February 15, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., assisting residents with income tax returns. PFC Gerald J. Fief, son of James A. Fief, recently took part in the 2nd Armored Division tests in Germany, including tank infantry coordination and chemical, biological, and radiological warfare. Private First Class Fief entered the Army in 1954, completed basic training at Camp Chaffee, and arrived in Europe in 1955. Army Private Ronald L. Denchfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick R. Denchfield, recently graduated from the Military Police Training Center at Camp Gordon, Ga. The 21-year-old is a Garden City High School graduate and KU Phi Gamma Delta member who attended the University of Kansas. Burtis Motor Company of Garden City earned the Ford Four-Letter Award for outstanding dealer performance, per Kansas City district sales personnel and Ford Motor Company officials. Keith D. Hampton of Ulysses, KU senior, joined 14 Army ROTC graduates commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army Reserve. he has engineering studies and awaits active-duty orders. Garden City police court fines and costs for January totaled $989, per the judge’s annual report approved by the city commission. The city commission granted Emil Salyer permission to connect Wheat Lands Motel’s swimming pool to the city sewer, with a service charge to be determined by the engineer.

Army mulls reserve training center for Great Bend

Great Bend considers leasing a site for a proposed military reserve training center. The Army will decide whether to build, making it the fourth such center in Kansas. Col. Glen Soderstrom of the Wichita district inspected the site.

High School String Symphony Delights Local Audiences

More than 400 attendees enjoyed the annual high school string symphony at the school auditorium. The program spanned classics to contemporary pieces and romantic selections, with most players being junior high students and only four seniors. Soloists Robert Austin and Leo Jo Kopp performed Bruch and Mendelssohn Concertos in G minor, Op. 25, as the event opened a likely series of year end concerts conducted by Loren Crawford.

Feeds Lower in Chicago Market as Grain Prices Swing

Irregular market action sees wheat and soybeans mixed with gains and losses. March contracts liquidated in feed grains while old crop wheat firmed after early selling. New crop months stayed weak due to moisture in winter wheat regions. Soybeans show soft old crops with cash declines, while new crop weeks resist selling amid several easy days. Obituary notices for Hoskins Geyer and Cole in Kansas

Funeral services are set for Mary Olive Hoskins at 10 30 a m Thursday at Friends church Fowler Kansas with burial in Fowler cemetery. She was 49 years a resident of Fowler and survived by a daughter son three sisters and nine grandchildren. Also funeral services for Edward L Geyer will be held at 2 p m Thursday from Phillips chapel Garden City with burial in Valley View cemetery. He was 80 a former farmer who lived in Cimarron and Garden City area. Ernest Cole a Kearny county rancher died yesterday at age 74 after a long Kansas career near Deerfield Finney and Lakin. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
