Garden City Police Department faces recruitment pain as a tight economic climate keeps qualified candidates away. Since 2000 the GCPD has been short at least 12 officers, with 51 of 63 positions filled as of January 1. Police Chief James Hawkins notes the department has never been fully staffed in his 19 years. Ed Pavey of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center says shortages have lingered nationally and worsen in strong economies.
Finney County Sheriff Kevin Bascue reports all 100 positions in the sheriff s office are filled as of December with no openings for patrol officers jail deputies or office personnel. He cites jail expansion turnover and retirements that once caused vacancies, now replaced by two pending hires and 15 to 20 applications awaiting processing. The sheriff notes a tight economy influencing recruitment.
Kansas Senator Huelskamp moved from the Ways and Means Committee to a Medicaid reform task force named by Senate President Kerr. Kerr and Sen. Clark frame Huelskamp as energetic and capable, aiming to address the Medicaid budget surge which has grown 91 percent to over $712 million in seven years.
U S Representative Jerry Moran visited Garden City on his Big First listening tour with stops in Lakin and Seon to hear farmers and ranchers. He blamed drought for weakening Kansas agriculture, urged targeted aid, and criticized broad-based relief that misses those hit hardest. Moran noted Kansas farmers aging toward 58 and said some do not return to run family farms amid financial strain. Finney County officials pressed that decisions with funding have downstream tax impacts.
USD 457 Board of Education is set to name a successor to Superintendent Milt Pippenger. Deputy Superintendent Jim Lentz applied for the post and had an informal interview. He met with board members and provided a list of district administrator certified candidates.
