Garden City and Finney County observe Tuesday closures

City and county offices in Garden City and Holcomb close Tuesday for New Year. Banks and post offices, libraries, museums and the Telegram also suspend service. Wal-Mart branch closes Monday at 6 pm. No Tuesday edition of the newspaper will be published.

Memorial balloon travels 800 miles linking strangers

A Kansas family memorial balloon voyage began after Gage Switzer, an eight year old Hesston pupil, died when a tarp trapped him under a tractor. After his funeral, over 100 balloons were released and a Georgia man traced one to his five acre Greenville property, creating an unexpected cross state friendship.

Blue Cross sale could yield uneven checks for Kansas firms

The proposed 321 million sale of Blue Cross to Anthem would distribute funds to 171 403 policyholders. Companies with more than 50 employees would receive about 100 000, while those with 50 or fewer get around 1000 or less. Don's Auto Center would receive 479.76 despite seven workers, triggering questions about fairness. Florists from Johnson City help decorate Rose Parade float

Denise Huse and Anna Hudgins from Expressions in Johnson City joined volunteers in Pasadena to decorate the American Society of Civil Engineers float for the 2002 Rose Parade. They worked five days, hung from a 20 foot scaffold to apply clover seed and other natural materials, volunteered without pay, and returned home to watch the parade with families.
