Highway Toll Trails Yale Carnage In Holiday Deaths

The Associated Press reports New Year's traffic toll rising but below the Christmas peak. With a 102 hour holiday, 224 lives lost in crashes, plus 24 fire deaths and 37 from other accidents, totaling 285. Counts began Friday 1 p.m. and run to Tuesday midnight.

Over the Christmas four day period 706 people died in highway crashes and 54 non traffic deaths were recorded. National Safety Council president Ned H Dearborn notes an ominous trend while New Year’s Eve and Day remain the deadliest times. Fear Arson in Hartford Church Fires

Hartford officials fear arson after two Catholic churches, St. Patrick's and St. Joseph’s, were wrecked within about 31 hours in Hartford. Police protection was ordered around the clock for all churches and synagogues as Fire Marshal Kennedy notes arson as a possible factor in the St. Patrick’s blaze causing over a quarter of a million dollars in damages.

Light Haulin Points Thefts In Five Points Area

A wave of break ins hit the Five Points area in Garden City late Saturday into Sunday morning. Burglars took only $6 in dimes from four victims at Friesen Skelly Phillips service station and Garden Bowl bowling hall. An attempt to enter Stoners Five Points grocery store failed per police.

Earthy Story Wins Best in Burlington Liars Club Contest

In Burlington Wis the Liars Club named Albert B Hopkins winner with an earthy tale about hogs and gumbo. The 49 year old Electro technician took 6 in dimes from a Madison cash register in a break in at a service station. Police traced the burglars and found break in and gumbo themed clues amid other area thefts. Hopkins’s prize includes a gold plated diamond studded medal while notes reference last year’s champ from Kalispell Mont who spun a tall tale about a sheepherder and flour.

Eisenhower to Visit Farms Near Garden City in January

President Eisenhower will tour the Garden City area on January 15 arriving at She lip airport at 12 40 p.m. He will visit Garden City proper and not enter the city limits.
