The Associated Press reports New Year's traffic toll rising but below the Christmas peak. With a 102 hour holiday, 224 lives lost in crashes, plus 24 fire deaths and 37 from other accidents, totaling 285. Counts began Friday 1 p.m. and run to Tuesday midnight.
Over the Christmas four day period 706 people died in highway crashes and 54 non traffic deaths were recorded. National Safety Council president Ned H Dearborn notes an ominous trend while New Year’s Eve and Day remain the deadliest times. Wilt Chamberlain is described as a towering figure both on court and at a breakfast table, where his height creates comic dining challenges. The Kansas City hotel elevator operator quips about belt buckles as basketball players board, with two fatalities named Kenski and Fritzemeier among the latest victims.

In Burlington Wis the Liars Club named Albert B Hopkins winner with an earthy tale about hogs and gumbo. The 49 year old Electro technician took 6 in dimes from a Madison cash register in a break in at a service station. Police traced the burglars and found break in and gumbo themed clues amid other area thefts. Hopkins’s prize includes a gold plated diamond studded medal while notes reference last year’s champ from Kalispell Mont who spun a tall tale about a sheepherder and flour.
Garden Citians plan a welcome for an infant born in ’57 with a New Year’s Eve gathering. The open house runs 9 p.m. to midnight with dancing, games, and refreshments for members and guests, plus Elks activities and other local celebrations.
Garden City police and Kansas highway patrol plan in-town spot checks tonight and tomorrow to reduce New Year accidents. St James Lutheran church holds a 2 am service. St Mary’s Catholic observances include Masses at 8, 7, 8, 9 and 10 am. Keystone Sunday school hosts a watch party tonight. Elks lodge party scheduled tomorrow at church basement. Anonymous caller warned a Denver bound Continental plane of a bomb. Grounding and searches disrupted westbound flights through Garden City and Topeka but no devices found. Police across New York and Wichita report ongoing bomb threats and a single suspected device found and analyzed without harm.
The Garden City Junior Chamber of Commerce began its annual search for the outstanding young man of the year. The winner will receive the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award at a ceremony this autumn.
President Eisenhower will tour the Garden City area on January 15 arriving at She lip airport at 12 40 p.m. He will visit Garden City proper and not enter the city limits. Nominations for the Distinguished Service Award are open to young men 21 to 35 based on community service and leadership. Governor George Docking and James McCain may attend the visit, with plans to span six states.
A U S Air Force Constellation crashed near Dhahran Saudi Arabia in dense fog killing fifteen aboard and injuring many others. The wreck occurred 1 000 yards from the runway as two other planes of the same flight continued to Muharraq Bahrain.
