Cold air covers wide sections as storm dumps snow
A major late December snow storm moved into eastern Canada and covered wide areas from the Midwest to New England with cold air. Snow squalls and high winds persisted along the eastern Great Lakes to New England, while the Dakotas Minnesota and northern New England saw snow flumes and cold readings. Temperatures fell below zero in parts of the Midwest and near freezing in the South and West with heavy snow in some Midwest cities and two feet in mountain New England. Rain washed away much of the snow in eastern coastal sections including Boston and Blue Hill Observatory reported 95 mph gale winds. Outside the belt, rain fell in the Far Northwest turning to snow in the northern Rockies. Idaho Utah and western Montana saw 1 to 3 inch accumulations in six hours. Showers along the Texas Gulf Coast contrasted with clear skies across much of the south.
