Surge in Abandoned Horses Strains Kansas Shelters
Rescue groups in Kansas report a spike in abandoned horses, led by older animals, as hay and grain costs rise and donations fall. Hope in the Valley Equine Rescue near Valley Center now cares for 25 to 30 horses, up from 10 to 15, with some adopted quickly and others staying years. Local authorities say holiday timing and higher feed costs drive the trend, while public awareness grows through media and reporting.
