Kansas State preserves carnivorous plants in herbarium collection

In Manhattan Kansas the Herbarium at Kansas State University houses about 200000 preserved specimens including aquatic insectivorous plants with bladder traps from Seward County. Associate Professor Carolyn Ferguson notes these plants thrive in nutrient poor areas and trap prey to obtain nitrogen and phosphorus. The Herbarium, dating to 1877, holds specimens from North America and abroad, all dried and catalogued with detailed collection data, now frozen briefly to kill pests before mounting.
