Bank cuts prime rate to 11 percent in New York
Chase Manhattan Bank lowered its prime lending rate by half a point to 11 percent, the lowest since August 1980, marking the first cut since banks had adopted 11.5 percent on November 22. Economists cite weak demand and Fed policy as drivers of falling loan costs. The discount rate remains 8.5 percent, down from July, and three month certificates yield 8.7 percent, down from 15.25 percent in late June.
