Conflict of Interest Showcases Public Service Ethics
The article discusses local officials facing required resignations or financial tradeoffs to avoid conflicts. Duane West left a $10,000 a year examiner post to join the city commission, while Cecil Baker must relinquish bank ties as ethics rules prohibit public funds deposits when a banking entity is a depository. Baker will have the bank decline deposits, costing the bank money, illustrating the cost to public service and the value of avoiding conflicts of interest.
