Desertions Rise Among South Vietnamese Soldiers in 1969
Washington AP reports that desertions from South Vietnamese forces rose slightly from 9 to 10 per 1000 men between September and October 1969. Officials say the rate, though down from October 1968, remains a major concern as over one million soldiers are affected. Amenities for families and better contact are urged to curb the trend, while elite units show strong retention. The US says militia desertions are lower due to proximity to home. Local programs since 1965 attempted reforms but with limited success.
