Energy Crisis Shifts Holiday Shopping Tactics Across Stores
An Associated Press survey across nine cities finds healthy sales but shifting priorities as fuel shortages trim living room warmth. Fireplaces, heaters, storm windows, and thermals rise in demand while clothing like flannel pajamas and goose-down jackets sell briskly. Stores report less interest in dressy wear, more in practical gifts, with space heaters, microwaves, and electric blankets cited as big sellers. Gas-free Sundays reduce downtown shopper footfall, yet overall spending per holiday approaches. Major chains including Montgomery Ward, Gimbels, L.L. Bean, Jordan Marsh, Titche's, Broadway, and Woodward & Lothrop show varied impacts.

Ward's Chicago speech links energy crisis to buying patterns
In a recent Chicago address Ward's stated the energy crisis will affect buying patterns more than overall spending. He noted the gasoline shortage could benefit the business by lowering demand for larger cars, reducing steel needs in that sector and aiding the appliance industry.
