Storm slams Kansas causing fatal crash and school closures
A blizzard in Kansas brought snow and heavy winds leading to at least one death in a three vehicle collision on U S Highway 50 near Dodge City. Dozens of school districts including Topeka and Lawrence canceled classes. Power outages affected hundreds as Westar Energy reported fewer than 1,000 customers still without power. Roads were icy with U S 36 briefly closed but reopened by midmorning. Governor Brownback delayed state office openings to aid commuting. Farmers welcomed snow for drought relief, hoping heavy wet snow stores on fields.
