Miami circuit Judge George E Holt 53 suffered serious head injuries after his Jaguar sped at 70 mph in a police chase and collided with a motorcycle. Riders Leonard Feitelson 21 and Mary Martin 20 were seriously hurt. Holt, arrested in May 1953 in Daytona Beach for speeding 50 in a 25 zone, forfeited a 15.50 bond and denounced Daytona Beach speed rap.

The Labor Department reports costs rose about 0.1 percent between October and November while take-home pay for factory workers hits a new peak. November marks the third straight month of record after-tax pay, averaging 72.85 dollars weekly for a worker with three dependents and 65.49 dollars for one with no dependents, about 80 cents higher than October.

Three polio victims arrive by Air Force plane from Honolulu to Travis Field California. Among them are Mrs Patty Knapp of Newton Kansas and Airman Stuart Modder of Beverly Hills in iron lungs. Mrs Knapp’s four month old daughter Alika Ann is held by a nurse. They go to base hospital overnight with plans to move the mother and child to Omaha Nebraska for treatment and Modder to San Diego.
TOPEKA The Kansas State Teachers Assn reports a survey showing Kansas teachers and administrators earned an average of 3660 this year up 180 from last year. The state ranks 27th nationally with a estimated U S average around 4100, the association said.
A committee of independent unions proposes unifying about 2.5 million members outside AFL CIO into one national body. The plan calls for a unification convention in May and a January 2021 Baton Rouge meeting to kick off efforts for higher wages and benefits for oil workers.
A Gibson Circuit Court jury recommended the death penalty for Leslie Irvin 31 after convicting him of the December 23 1954 murder of Wesley W Kerr 29 an Evansville service station operator in a robbery The verdict came after nine minutes of deliberation and was delayed for appeals The courtroom scene included Irvins mother Evansville resident Mrs Alice Irvin and Goebel Duncan survivor of a triple slaying linked to Irvin The Duncan family tragedy occurred near Henderson Kentucky on March 21
GRANDVIEW Missouri Former President Truman presented the Grandview Masonic Lodge a stone from the White House discovered during 1950 renovations. He noted 102 stones with Mason marks were found, dating to 1792 1799. Stones have been given to state grand lodges and several international bodies, with Grandview and the District of Columbia lodge the only blue lodges receiving them.
Ashland police warn stores to beware of a counterfeit trick where four $1 bills have corners cut and pasted to resemble a $10 bill. Police Chief Charles F. Howard says the altered notes may still pass at shops, though one corner is missing from each.
Finney County receives 150 853 16 in ad valorem tax vouchers from Santa Fe railway and Northern Natural Gas Co for 1955 taxes. County Judge M C Schrader imposed jail terms for two Garden City men, Henry Bert Duckworth and Robert Glenn McLinn, in a case involving two underage girls. McLinn received 90 days plus $5 costs, Duckworth 30 days plus $5 costs after pleading guilty.
Fire raged for over three hours in the main business district of Leighton Pennsylvania destroying nine buildings and vast Christmas stock driving 15 families into the cold. Assistant Fire Chief Norman Schneck estimated losses could reach as high as half a million dollars. The fire reportedly began shortly after midnight in the basement of a paint and wall paper business on South First Street.
Lt. Col. Paul V. Lilies was found guilty by a court martial at Fort Lewis Washington of aiding the enemy while a prisoner of war in North Korea from 1950 to 1953. The 39 year old Birmingham Alabama native and first West Point graduate to face such charges was acquitted on two additional counts.
TOPEKA Two new regulations by the State Highway Commission establish ports of entry to sell 30 day licenses and 72 hour trip permits and require recordkeeping. The rules also empower all law enforcement officers to check speedometers on vehicles under the 6000 mile registration permits. They follow the 1955 Legislature move to replace a ten mile tax with registrations and fees producing similar revenue.
In Kansas City, a gasoline truck exploded in the Strawberry Hill area, prompting residents to flee in night clothes. No injuries were reported as the 5,100 gallon main tank ruptured while the truck, driven by 26 year old Donald Bucklinger, caught fire. Bucklinger said a fuel line broke after the engine ignited, lighting two 40 gallon safety tanks and triggering a vapor ignition via a release valve.
The State Social Welfare Department names Er nest L. Stanley of Topeka as public information officer and statistician. Stanley, formerly with the State Labor Department, succeeds Jack C. Pulliam who becomes superintendent of the Kansas Boys Industrial School.

The 12 day Christmas vacation begins today with students returning Jan 3. Garden City teachers enjoyed a coffee hosted by the family living class. A red metal chair with toys flew from a pickup on Jones Ave. Holcomb school to stage a Christmas program Thursday night 8 pm led by Wilma Kidwell and Robert Anderson. The Garden City Rotary gains a billy goat from Dodge City club to be kept by the lowest attendance club. Rev Irwin Johnson spoke during the luncheon.
Interior Secretary Douglas McKay said he would like to retire next year and live quietly in Oregon or Hawaii. He spoke to newsmen before flying with his wife to Portland after a 10 day inspection visit in Honolulu.
