Washington AP reports Senate Republican leader Trent Lott resigns amid pressure from colleagues and Bush White House. Tennessee Senator Bill Frist leads in candidacy with backing from several senators. Mitch McConnell previously supported Lott but eyed the No. 1 post if vacated.
Trent Lott faced calls to quit after praising Strom Thurmond at his 100th birthday party. Kansas figures like Sen. Sam Brownback backed Bush's rebuke but stopped short of calling for Lott's removal. Eric Snell, head of Kansas Black Republican Council, argued Lott's treatment has been harsh and noted media response.
