Mental health parity bill eyed by Senate panel
LAWRENCE AP The Senate Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee will consider a bill requiring health plans to cover mental illness treatment from the start. Senator Sandy Praeger says a parity law is needed as 32 states already have such measures. Praeger, R-Lawrence, will chair the committee and serve as Senate vice president when the Legislature opens. Proponents cite 10 percent of the population with mental illness and potential long term cost savings through proper treatment. Critics note concerns about incentives for hospitalization. The measure would affect about 30 percent of workers not covered by employer self insurance. Governor Graves supports the measure.
