Snow from recent winter storms has little impact on drought in northeast Kansas. State climatologist Mary Knapp says communities may finish the year 30 percent behind normal precipitation. A federal drought report lists Nemaha, Jackson, Pottawatomie and Marshall as worst affected counties with 5 to 9 inches of snow but little moisture. Moderate drought lingers in eight counties including Brown, Clay, Doniphan, Geary, Jefferson, Shawnee and Washington. Average precipitation ranges from 30 inches in far northeast to 40 inches in the Missouri River valley.
