A crowd estimated near 1,000 gathered at Owens home to see Klondike the fluffy white cub. KAKE-TV planned to air footage of the event with a newsreel cameraman on duty. The city’s TV reach and local proffers were noted as the cub enjoys a stable start in its Park Boss Owens residence.
Newton high school debaters defeated Moundridge to win first place at the Garden City invitational, going undefeated through eight rounds on the question of U.S. direct economic aid to other countries limited to technical assistance and disaster relief. Moundridge took second, beating Emporia in semis. Newton defeated Hutchinson to reach the final, with Emporia and Hutchinson tied for third. Judges for the final round aired on KIAL included Hope Jr, Mrs. R. W. Lang, and Dr. Leroy Hood.
Rosella Aulxier of eastern Kentucky, 15, began thawing after five days in extreme cold. In Louisville for treatment, doctors remove ice packs from her legs as they monitor potential need for surgery.
