Bierocks sale at St. Dominic Church parish center
The high school mission trip group at St. Dominic Church will host a bierocks sale in the parish center kitchen from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Each bierock costs $2. Proceeds support the mission trip.

The high school mission trip group at St. Dominic Church will host a bierocks sale in the parish center kitchen from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Each bierock costs $2. Proceeds support the mission trip.
The Fulton Street Pub at 1301 E Fulton St hosts an auction at 7 p.m. Saturday with all proceeds benefiting Saint Francis Community Services to support holiday needs for children in state custody. Donations of items and cash gifts are requested, with tickets at $5 and advance sales available at the pub. For details contact Chad Herrera at 290-3144.
Kate Krug a speech therapist will address the Alzheimer's Support Group during its monthly meeting. She will share tips for eating and swallowing difficulties seen in Alzheimer's and related dementias. The 2 p.m. Monday session is in the parlor of First United Methodist Church 1106 N Main St using the Main Street entrance. The group invites friends and family members of those with Alzheimer's.
Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback announced Jeffery Stasch of Garden City will serve a four year term on the Kansas Dental Board. Stasch is a graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry. The board enforces the Kansas Dental Practices Act and comprises nine members including six dentists, two dental hygienists, and one public representative.
Three local organizations including Finney County Public Library Circles of Hope and Western Kansas American Red Cross received Recognition Grants from the Kansas Health Foundation. The Red Cross Kansas chapter will use 25000 for disaster services and training across 33 counties while the library funds back a Nature Explore Classroom project estimated at 360000. Circles of Hope received 9600 to support circle leader training and program costs for the 12 week program aiding low income participants.
Kansas auditors conclude implementing the national Common Core English and math standards could cost 34 to 63 million dollars over the next five years across 286 school districts. Real costs cover goods and services, while opportunity costs reflect training and professional development. Taxpayers may offset expenses by delaying textbook purchases and using existing training programs.
Southwest Kansas gains two committee chairs as Sen. Garrett Love of Montezuma becomes Agriculture chair and Sen. Larry Powell of Garden City leads Natural Resources. Powell, a House veteran, shifts to a Senate chair, while Love balances farming roots with new leadership role.
