The Garden City market shows 3,110 cattle and 301 hogs with calves and yearlings in demand. Calves sold steady to strong with lightweights 24 to 28.50 dollars, Holstein calves 16 to 18, and baby calves 28 to 47.50 per head. Cows and calves ranged 167.50 to 180 per pair. bulls 16 to 18.25. Hog top near 27.30, light weights 24 to 26.50, sows 20 to 22.90, boars 16 to 19.50. SW Kansas bids show slaughter steers 25 to 50 cents higher, heifers up 25 to 75 cents, with firm feeder prices and 4 percent shrink in slaughter cattle.
A massive ice and storm system blankets the continent with snow rain sleet and fog causing power outages and transport disruption. Dakota Minnesota and western areas suffer outages while fires and accidents spike in other regions. 2000 telephone poles broken 49 percent of Fargo exchanges down.
Postmaster Lester Harp warns that illegible handwriting and poor packaging create many undelivered parcels during Christmas mail surges. He urges clear one side addressing, inside address, contents list, tight packing, and optional ZIP codes to aid local post offices in routing. Estimations cite about half a million undelivered parcels yearly.
Mrs. George Cochran 83 mother of George D. Cochran of Dighton dies Sunday in Dodge City. Born Salisbury Missouri Aug 20 1882, moved to Dodge City 1907. Survived by three sons eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Burial at Maple Grove Cemetery Dodge City. Funeral at First Christian Church Dodge City follows death.
Two young men waived a preliminary hearing on charges of robbing the Piqua State Bank of six thousand three hundred dollars. Maurice Anton Kienlen, 23, of Humboldt and John Edward Stowell, 18, of Chanute, are held on fifteen thousand dollar bonds for U.S. district court trial.
Four Garden City students joined University of Kansas ensembles for Christmas Vespers yesterday. Rebecca Rogers Jackie Settles Roger Stoner Tom Wilson and Sharrie Snell listened to orchestral and choir performances alongside Tom Roberts from Scott City. Also, Fort Hays State College named 21 students to policy committees, including Larry Watkins. The Garden City junior college Christmas Dance follows the Garden City Dodge City game at the Civic Center from 9:30 to 11 p.m.
A Kansas town column prints handwritten requests to Santa from children and adults. Names and ages appear with specific wants such as dolls, toy weapons, bikes, a Walkie Talkie, a Creepy Crawlers set, and a sewing machine, all addressed to Santa Claus with holiday goodwill.
The Finney County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office was named the outstanding county office in the state for administering programs. Full time staff and county committee members received $50 certificates, with part time employees earning 25 awards. Front row names include Key Hudson, Millie Moore, and Orlene.

Two Garden City youths were injured in a two car collision at Pershing and Belmont at 12 02 p m. Roger Batchelder 15 of 702 N 6th and Bernard Joseph Huschka 15 Imperial Rt were taken to St Catherine Hospital with bruises abrasions and a possible back injury and minor injuries respectively. Roy E Fankhauser 16 of 1222 Belmont drove the other car traveling east on Belmont while Huschka’s vehicle headed north on Pershing. The Huschka vehicle skidded 124 feet and stopped in the center of the street. Four other passengers in the Huschka car were uninjured.

Two 14 year old boys were placed on six months probation in Juvenile Court for joy riding in a 198 sedan owned by Guy Burton Moore. The car veered off a county road five miles north of Anderson's Truck Stop, struck a telephone pole, and was demolished. No injuries reported among the three occupants. the 14 year old girl passenger was not charged. The youths were paroled to their parents. Saturday and Sunday traffic collisions reported with multiple drivers and damage levels in the 1300 Taylor block and nearby streets. Also listed are quit claim and warranty deed transfers involving Hazel Whitmore Marie Brainie and several property parcels in Holmes Third Addition and surrounding blocks.
The Supreme Court refused to review a ban on voluntary nursery-type prayers in public schools. Twenty one New York City students and parents from five faiths argued such prayers are allowed under the First Amendment. The case stems from a New York Circuit ruling upholding the school principal’s ban as unconstitutional establishment of religion.
A Southwest Kansas regional meeting for Mental Health Association leaders will occur in Garden City on January 5. Marion J. Craney and Duane West announce a training session for mental health workers including presidents and board members. The Church of the Brethren hosts from 10 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dr. William Black will attend. the event launches a 1966 training series across Kansas.
