Board Drops Water Proposal In Southwest Kansas GMD 3

The board of Groundwater Management District No. 3 voted to withdraw a proposal to close areas to new non domestic water wells in the southern district after 25 speakers urged against the ban. Mayor Neal Gillespie noted water is essential but employment matters also. The board also urged further study by Kansas Chief Engineer David Pope on hydraulic and economic impacts. More than 175 attended the Wheat Lands Center hearing, addressing August 14 district actions affecting Stevens Seward Morton Meade Ford counties.

A study on minorities and health care finds infant mortality among blacks in Kansas is double the statewide average and black men have the highest rates of prostate, lung, and colorectal cancer. Blacks under 8 percent of the population account for nearly 18 percent of diagnosed AIDS cases.

A summit on minority health issues highlighted a study showing language barriers poverty insurance gaps and limited access to providers as creating a health care gulf between minorities and white Kansans. Funded by the Kansas Health Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation the study surveyed Wichita minority communities.

Schiffelbein Family Faces Two Tragedies and Triumphs

The Schiffelbein family survived a brutal year beginning with Taylor's E coli illness and kidney failure requiring dialysis and transfusions, followed by Brian nearly fatally toppled from a bucket truck.
