Feast of Guadalupe observed at St Mary Church

Worshipers gather before sunrise at St Mary Church on 12th Street to begin the Feast of Guadalupe with Mananitas mass at 5 a.m. An afternoon procession to Stevens Park leads back to St Mary for a second service recounting the apparition story with Indian dancers and drummers.

Indoor free walking route at Garden City College

A free indoor walking route is available in the Garden City Community College Physical Education Building for community members. The route runs through the building during hours aligned with the Aerobic Super Circuit, from 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday when the campus is open. Questions can be directed to the athletic director at 276-9606. The campus closes for Christmas Break at end of day December 19 and reopens January 1.

A retirement reception is set for Tuesday from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m. at Pierceville Plymell Elementary School to honor Barbara White. White has served USD 457 for more than 24 years as a custodian at Hutchinson, Lincoln, and Pierceville Plymell schools.

Krispy Kreme Donuts Sale By Youth Group

The First Christian Church youth group sells Krispy Kreme donuts Saturday from 8 a.m. until sold out at two downtown locations Kansas Avenue Fleming Street lot and the Warren Building Main and Chestnut streets. Donuts cost six dollars a dozen with proceeds funding a mission trip to New York City and Washington, D.C.

Legislative forum hosted by Southwest Developmental Services

Emergency drill at St Catherine Hospital involves 160 responders

An early Wednesday exercise at St Catherine Hospital and Finney County Emergency Management tested emergency preparedness with 160 participants including 103 hospital staff and 57 law enforcement EMS fire and hazmat personnel. A methal parathin chemical spill scenario injured a jogger and bicyclist and involved a bus, a pregnant wife, and a responding medical sweep to stress the ER.

Winter Holiday Parade planned in Garden City Saturday

Paula Banister will organize the annual Winter Holiday Parade with 29 entries at 6 p.m. at the Finney County Exhibition Building, traveling down Main Street to Hackberry Street where prizes will be awarded at Stevens Park. Sebelius Faces Drug Price Gap Across Borders

TOPEKA The Medicare overhaul fails to quiet Governor Kathleen Sebelius who wants Kansas to test buying prescription drugs from Canada. Spokeswoman Nicole Corcoran says the bill leaves Canada ordering bans in place but a price study by Bob Day will compare costs for common drugs. Initial findings show Premarin costs about 3.25 per prescription in Canada versus 28 locally. The state must assess employee demand and logistical details before acting.

Holcomb Council OKs 6K for court software upgrade

Holcomb city council approved up to 6000 for a Data Technologies Inc court management system to replace the manual tracking by the clerk. Municipal Judge Gene Gaede said the upgrade will streamline court and payment reminders and enhance collections. The town will cover installation and two days of training with two payments. A separate highway discussion addressed US 50 expansion with IBP Road impacts and traffic coordination near Holcomb schools. City staff also approved Cambridge Square Addition No 3 plat and a water tower demolition contract for 17500 by LFW Sandblasting. The next meeting is January 14 at 7 p.m.
