Reagan era acreage set aside plan gains farm support

Agriculture officials predict farmer backing for a two year acreage set aside in exchange for surplus government grain and cash. President Reagan backs the idea after meeting with Agriculture Secretary John Block who sought input from commodity groups. Iowa Farm Bureau expects popularity but warns some farmers may be excluded. Kansas and Missouri farm leaders back the concept, while grain dealers fear reduced demand for seed and fertilizer. The plan would remove up to half of cropland from wheat corn rice and cotton production and would supplement existing controls while handling stockpiled surpluses.
