Stevens County wins largest grant in Kansas fire recruit program
The Office of the State Fire Marshal announced the first recipients of a new grant to bolster volunteer recruitment for Kansas fire departments. Stevens County Fire Department led all recipients with 15 576 dollars, funding eight bunker gear sets and gear maintenance, washer extractor machines, and junior firefighter programs. Chief Rodney Kelling noted volunteers’ declining numbers and emphasized gear quality and safety as key attractors. The 2016 budget funded the program to aid departments statewide, with reapplication possible in 2017 as budgets allow.
