Banks View Farm Payments As Key In Credit Decisions
Government payments exceeding one fifth of net farm income are seen by bankers as vital to loan access. A USDA survey in Farm Index notes total federal payments may top 4 billion this year and net farm income reach 18.8 billion. Bankers weigh tenure, loan purpose and financial condition more than loan size, with collateral often set at 30 percent. Interest rates ranged from 7.25 to 9 percent in the southcentral plains area as of last February.

Tinkering With Feed Grain Plan
The Agriculture Department continues to tinker with the 1973 feed grain program with possible announcements to farmers this week. Options under review could raise soybean plantings next spring from 48 to 52 million acres, about a 12 percent increase from 1972. Harold Kuehn of the Americansoybean Association says a 10 percent rise is most justifiable, potentially yielding 1.45 billion bushels of soybeans next year versus 1.35 billion in 1972.
