State commerce officials told a legislative committee exports could hit 8 billion, surpassing last year's 6.8 billion record. John Watson said foreign sales supported about 70,000 Kansas jobs, with division efforts yielding 18 million in export sales annually and 350 new jobs. Canada leads markets, followed by Mexico and China.
Kansas Department of Transportation officials met with sixth district leaders in Garden City to map long term needs as the 10 year Comprehensive Transportation Program nears expiration in 2009. Major projects require five to ten years planning, and officials warned against false hopes before funding is secured.
Holcomb Elementary fourth grader Garrett Janda counted back change as he bought a $2.50 peat moss bell ornament at the school Holiday Craft Fair. The fair, in its ninth year, features student made crafts bought by teachers and families with proceeds supporting schools.
In downtown Tribune shoppers lingered after 6 p.m. as The Flower Shoppe owner Sherri Elder kept her doors open to 8 p.m. for the city Christmas Open House. The event, sponsored by the Greeley County Community Development Office, featured local music, a free children's movie at Tribune Family Theatre, a craft show, and seasonal browsing across downtown businesses.
The commission said Iraq policy is not working and urged diplomacy to stabilize the country and allow withdrawal of most combat troops by early 2008. It warned of a grave and deteriorating situation and called for reduced U S support if Baghdad cannot make progress. President Bush pledged to consider proposals seriously.
