Finney and capital punishment in Kansas history
The article tracks former Kansas governor Finney’s stance on the death penalty from the Furman v Georgia era through the 1990s. It notes her veto of a 1979 capital punishment bill, later support for enacting the law in 1994, and her insistence on keeping promises to the voters amid partisan shifts and legislative battles. It also highlights her populist rhetoric and push for direct ballot initiatives.

District tests prompt improvement push in USD 457
USD 457 faces a push to boost student performance as the Kansas Assessments join a battery of tests. While not deemed more critical, the district aims to improve scores after above state unsatisfactory rates in several elementary schools and mid/high schools. ACT Explore results show mixed national alignment. NAEP results look stronger for Garden City. The district reviews the audit, updates a no resuscitation policy, and considers selling Valentine School land for 10,000 after a 7,000 purchase.
