Protesters push halt on coal plants in Kansas capitol

About 100 demonstrators gathered outside the Kansas Capitol as they urged Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to halt environmental permits for Sunflower Electric's three 700 megawatt coal plants in Finney County and to pursue wind and other clean energy. They called for a blue ribbon study on emissions and highlighted wind power as creating more jobs while keeping dollars in Kansas. Sunflower says the plants would supply 1.5 million rural residents and create 140 permanent jobs, with plans to contract 50 megawatts of wind from Gray County Wind Farm.
