Radioactive Waste Storage Sparks Idaho Debate
Idaho officials clash with the Atomic Energy Commission over temporary above-ground storage of radioactive waste at the National Reactor Testing Station. Tens of thousands of barrels and boxes, some aging beyond design life, risk long term contamination unless exhumed and repackaged. Bills notes 250000 year surveillance may be required for plutonium, while plants outline plans to move waste before 1989.
