The Kearny County Library showcases the Department 56 Christmas Village and the city of Lindsborg Village through December. Lights at 101 E Prairie, Lakin, will be off from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday except the village lights, as Christmas stories are read.

Free Child Screening Set for Friday in Garden City

Garden City USD 457 offers a free screening clinic Friday for residents' children ages 3 to 5. The session runs 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1010 Fleming St. It includes hearing, vision, large and small muscle development, communication and thinking skills checks. GCCC opens spring enrollment with extended hours

Garden City Community College announces public enrollment for spring classes. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. Friday through Dec 19 and Jan 7 to 9. Spring term starts Jan 12 with early enrollment advised.

Vespers Concert at GCCC Sunday in Pauline Joyce Building

Garden City Community College presents the annual Vespers Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building auditorium. The free event follows an open house with refreshments and the 2003-2004 GCCC Art Faculty Exhibition. More than three dozen students from 11 area communities perform 19 seasonal selections with vocalists and instrumentalists.

Panel endorses 500 million bond plan for KPERS health

A Kansas study committee endorsed a plan to issue 500 million in bonds to bolster KPERS funding, aiming to close a 2.7 billion long term gap. The plan starts 15.1 million in 2005, faces general revenue backing, and remains part of broader pension fixes debated by lawmakers and Gov. Sebelius.

Multiple Theft Incidents Reported Across City Blocks

Between November 5 and November 26, several property thefts are under investigation. Incidents include a wallet stolen from an apartment on Labrador Boulevard worth 20 dollars, a 1100 dollar cash theft at Taco John's on Kansas Avenue, a 10 dollar handicap placard, a 455 dollar loss during a move, a 130 dollar stereo, 80 dollars in cash, a 5 dollar check, and a fraudulent credit card use on Garden City Avenue. Investigation continues.

Garden City hosts Corporate Meltdown fitness contest begin Jan 20

Garden City Community College and partners launch a six week Corporate Meltdown program starting Jan 20 with weigh ins, weekly 6:30 to 7:30 pm sessions and topics on healthy living. About 30 teams last year shed 686 pounds. Entry deadline Jan 13 costs 100 per five person team.

Mayor veto blocks gun ownership rule in Geuda Springs

GEUDA SPRINGS AP Residents balk at a proposed ordinance requiring households to own firearms and ammunition or face fines. Mayor Edward Lacey vetoed the measure, which Council had approved 3-2. A revised version will be reviewed February 2, and a nonbinding voter poll will gauge opinion at the January meeting. The sheriff warned the rule could endanger officers responding to calls.
